I’m not a very creative person, but I really love looking at other people’s crafty creations. Some projects are so simple that I get inspired to actually try them myself. Here are a few green projects that I’ve put on my list:
1. Beautiful Bark Covered Pots
This DIY idea comes from a blog called Fun in the Making. The only materials needed to turn boring old plastic pots into such custom made planters are bark pieces of similar length, a hot glue gun, a pair of pliers, a old pots of different sizes. If I had a kitchen sink window shelf, I’d definitely make teeny herb pots, like the one shown in the photo. Great for gifts!
2. Suitcase Turned Vanity
Though I don’t think I would make this for myself, this upcycled suitcase turned into a bathroom vanity is just plain cool. On the Etsy shop Love ~ Nostalgic ~ Whimsy you will find “all things recycled, salvaged and perfectly earth-friendly for your home.”
This artistic organizational wonder comes from a beautiful blog called 33 Shades of Green. The only materials you will need are frames (found on Freecycle, garage sales, thrift stores, etc.), cork tiles (if they can’t be procured for free, you can find them at Target), push pins, a metal ruler, and a utility knife. You can go crazy creative here by finding funky or vintage frames, covering the cork with a patterned cloth and by decorating the frame. This is more than organization — it’s art!
Before going out to a store and buying a brand new item for your home, do a little Internet research – maybe you’ll find one you can make for less money and with more meaning.
