Brr! It is starting to feel a lot like the holidays here in Texas, even if there is no snow! The weather is chilly and hot cocoa is on the menu. I didn’t have any unsweetened almond milk on hand, so I came up with a substitute to make it creamy — a banana!
Yes, a banana.
I used to drink lots of hot cocoa in the past on the cold wintery nights. I switched to green tea when I realized the amount of sugar in the powdered hot chocolate. But you know, I sometimes still like to have that warm cup of cocoa. I decided to try and come up with a healthier option when I am craving the cocoa!
Ingredients (I used all organic):
- 1 banana
- 1/4 cup of raisins or really any type of sweetener would work
- 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa or carob (it just wont be as rich)
- 1/2tsp-1tsp cinnamon
- 4 cups of water or homemade almond milk
Optional: add mint or peppermint extract instead of cinnamon for a chocolate minty cocoa.
Makes 4 serving.
Blend the banana and raisins in a small blender until smooth. Whisk together all ingredients including the banana/raisin mixture in small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir gently until all ingredients’ particles are dissolved. The banana makes this hot cocoa very creamy.
I used only 1/4 cup of raisins and it made for a very dark rich flavor, if you prefer something a little more sweet, add more raisins or a vegan friendly sweetener! Enjoy this healthy creamy treat.
