Unfortunately, it is not always easy to get the family motivated to exercise in today’s hectic and frantic world.
The great thing about exercising with the whole family is that everyone reaps the benefits; whether it’s weight loss/management, confidence/self-esteem, lower heart risks and even improving life expectancy.
Getting your children to eat healthily is half the battle, once they are eating the right stuff it’s time to get them out in to the world to burn all that built up energy.
It’s important to remember that inactive children are likely to become inactive adults, making family activities and fitness part of your child’s life at an early age can go a long way toward helping them form healthy habits for life.
Your job as a parent is to make exercise as fun as possible, because your children won’t care — or even think about — the benefits of regular exercise. As the perfect role model it’s time for you to stand up and help yourself to healthier and longer life, here are some ideas for family exercise activities that can get you all moving:
Schedule & Budget
You may find it easier to plan your activity days before you consider doing them. Set aside a few days a week for family activity time.
Plan games around your usual routine. If you have a limited budget consider activities like soccer, football, hopscotch or even hide-and-seek. There are some great online tools to help you manage your family’s activity budgets.
The best way to get your kids motivated is to take them out on a weekend. There a thousands of destinations and tourist attractions waiting to be explored. Consider taking them to local hotspots like castles and gardens, even challenge them for a run/walk up a local hill/mountain. You could also consider asking your kids to simply go grocery shopping with you.
When it comes to day trips out you could consider looking for local days out that are within walking distance of your home.
You could try to leave the car at home as much as possible and use maybe try getting around by bike. Simple things like, cycling to the store or local library or bike to school to pick up or drop of your kids. This will help you reduce your carbon footprint and help you on your way in becoming greener and more environmentally friendly.
As soon as your children get home they may just flop out in front of the television, if they do consider participating in some after school sports or allowing them to join a school sports club.
Make an event out of everything
Whenever you get chance to have family and or friends over try and arrange activities that support exercise, whether this is planning activity games for parties or an outing to the local swimming pool or sports center. You will find that some great memories can be made through exercise!
Make your yard an Olympic Park
If you have the space in your yard you could add equipment and features to help encourage your kids to exercise. There are hundreds of things you can add to make your yard an exciting exercise heaven — jungle or multi gym, give them chalk, a climbing wall, soccer net, basketball hoop, and so much more.
The more options your children have for exercise in the yard or garden, the less they will approach you with the overused words “I am bored”. Dig deep and give your kids a reason to be fit, happy and healthy.
